The Mexican Cap and Rays 8 Reale is one of the great classic silver coins of the Western Hemisphere, and an early Republic issue from the San Luis Potosi mint carries particular appeal for collectors of 19th-century world coinage. Struck in 1835 at the Pi (San Luis Potosi) mint by assayers J.S., this large silver coin was produced during the formative years of the Mexican Republic, when regional mints operated under independent supervision and output varied considerably from year to year. The 8 Reale served as the principal trade coin of the era, circulating across North America, Asia, and beyond.

This is the much rarer 8R"s" variety -- you can see a small S after the R on the obverse which occurred on a few of the coins struck that year in San Luis Postosi. It is very rare with only 30 examples known in all and only SIX coins are known better than our example.  This is a great coin for the money, in our opinion.

The obverse presents the iconic Phrygian liberty cap radiating bold sunrays in all directions, with the inscription "LIBERTAD" across the cap's band and the date 1835 along with mint and assayer marks at the lower periphery. The design is well-struck with strong relief on the central cap device and clearly defined ray elements. The reverse features the Mexican republican eagle perched on a cactus, grasping a serpent in its beak, encircled by the legend "REPUBLICA MEXICANA" and flanked by laurel and oak branches - the devices show sharp definition with attractive even patination across the surfaces.

PCGS has certified this coin AU-58, reflecting only the lightest friction on the highest points with substantial original luster remaining beneath a pleasing silver-gray patina. The surfaces are even and free of significant marks, and the strike quality is consistent with the San Luis Potosi mint's output of this period. The Cap and Rays 8 Reale remains a cornerstone of Mexican numismatics, and examples certified near the Mint State threshold are consistently sought by collectors of world silver. For those seeking a high-grade, problem-free example of this beloved colonial-era type, this coin delivers. The coin pictured is the exact coin you will receive.
