Few pre-Civil War gold coins carry a provenance as compelling as a confirmed Brother Jonathan shipwreck survivor. The 1859-S Twenty Dollar Liberty was struck at the San Francisco Mint during the height of California's gold rush era, when the facility produced enormous quantities of large-denomination gold coinage for commerce and export. This coin is certified by PCGS as a Brother Jonathan recovery piece, Series 70, Coin 26, linking it directly to the SS Brother Jonathan, which sank off the California coast in 1865.

The obverse presents the classic Coronet Liberty head facing left, her tiara inscribed LIBERTY, surrounded by thirteen six-pointed stars and the date 1859 below. The portrait retains bold definition with the hair curls and coronet details showing clear relief. The reverse displays the heraldic eagle with spread wings, shield on its breast, clutching arrows and olive branch, with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcing above and TWENTY D. below, the S mintmark visible beneath the eagle.

PCGS grades this example XF-45, consistent with even, moderate wear across the high points of the portrait and eagle, with remaining detail sharp in the protected areas and an attractive warm golden patina throughout. Brother Jonathan coins represent a distinct and historically documented collecting specialty, with each certified example traceable to a specific recovery series and coin number. The coin pictured is the exact coin you will receive.
