SS Brother Jonathan

The S.S. Brother Jonathan was a side-wheeler steam ship that set sail from the California coast in 1865 with a cache of freshly minted Double Eagles from the San Francisco mint. It struck an uncharted rock off the coast of Crescent City, California and sank to the bottom of the ocean. Only 19 survived of the 244 passengers, making it the deadliest shipwreck up to that time. Most of the coins from this shipwreck are high-quality Double Eagles from 1864 and 1865 minted in San Francisco.
